THE NEED – WHY IMAGE IS IMPORTANT
Edgewood Court is a low-income subsidized housing community. The community houses 300 youth between the ages of 5 and 18. Based on a recent need assessment conducted in the community, there is a
need for a community-based youth development program that offers academic support. From the assessment, we found that many residents have trouble assisting their children with daily homework assignments and projects and have concerns of their youth ability
to achieve at the required level. Furthermore,
the No Child Left Behind Act requires schools to show student proficiency in reading. In addition to parents, teachers have expressed the need of having supplemental services offered in the community during after school hours. Currently, we have
a partnership
with the local elementary school (Whitefoord Elementary School) and middle school (Coan Middle School) in the community.
This partnership allows us to provide academic after school assistance while collaborating
with teachers at the local schools about each individual student’s academic needs.
